Ho Chi Minh City (part 1)

We arrived in Ho Chi Minh City late Saturday night.  We were tired and wanted to get to our hotel room and go to sleep.  One of the things that amazed us from the very beginning was the amount of motorcycles in Vietnam.

There were hardly any cars compared to the amount of motorcycles on the street.

The traffic was chaotic but after living in Shanghai for 9 months we weren't even fazed.

We got up Sunday morning and found a taxi to take us to church.  We didn't know they had a branch until we were talking to our hometeacher and he said one of his friends lived there and could get us the info we needed.  We were a little late but got there anyway.  This time we were in the minority and had to have headphones to hear the tranlsation of the meeting.  The kids went to primary and Meagan got to stay with mom and dad for Sunday School.  Then she went to YW, I went to RS and David stayed for Priesthood.  I had several sisters try to translate for me and they did a great job.  They were so happy to help our little family with anything they could and we really enjoyed getting to go to church in another country.

We were able to go to the Cu Chi tunnels.  These were tunnels that the Vietnamese people dug to hide and fight the American soldiers during the Vietnam War.  We watched a short video telling us all about the heroes that killed lots of American soldiers.  It wasn't very cool.  The kids didn't like hearing about the Americans being killed.  After the movie we got to walk around and see some of the deadly traps they had built and used.  Eric was very frightened of them and was worried he was going to fall into a trap.

There was one tunnel that was very small and you had to go in it with your arms above your head.

We also got to see the tunnels that they had dug out to hide and move around in.

Meagan, Eric and mom only went part way into the tunnels

and our ever adventurous Heidi, Emma and Dad went the entire way in the tunnels.

The kids also got to try on rubber sandals and army hats.

We had a fun time at the tunnels even if it depicted mean American soldiers and brave Vietnamese people killing them.
